David Gleason returns to the Capital Region after receiving his master's degree in Ethnomusicology from Tufts University. As an ethnomusicologist he studied Caribbean folk and popular music in Puerto Rico and Cuba. His fieldwork culminated in his thesis entitled, "La Parranda Puertorriqueña: The Music, Symbolism, and Cultural Nationalism of Puerto Rico's Christmas Serenading Tradition." As a pianist he has performed with ensembles such as RumbaNaMa and The Boston Latin Band, The Either/Orchestra, Mojive, Altiplano, and the Kinewe African Drum Ensemble, and renown musicians like Fred Wesley, Danilo Perez, and John Fedchock. Mr. Gleason studied Music Education and Jazz Studies at the Crane School of music in Potsdam, New York and jazz piano with Capital Region Guru Lee Shaw. He is currently playing with The Joey Thomas Big Band, Joe Barna and the Jazz Explosion, and Hot House Jazz Trio, as well as developing material for his new Latin jazz project: Semsemayá. As an active educator, he will begin teaching music at Mont Pleasant Middle School in Schenectady, this September. |
