After studying drums and percussion with Fred King, Morris Goldenberg, Warren Smith, Earl Williams and serving four yearsas a Navy bandsman, after attending the Navy School of Music, Marcel Smiths' music career started in earnest in 1974.

He worked with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater from 1975 - 1980 playing every season except one, when he toured with the road company of "The Wiz". His time with Alvin Ailey included a six week run in Paris, President Jimmy Carters Inaugral Gala and an Ellington Festival, where he got to work with Duke Ellingtons band, directed by Mercer Ellington.

While in Europe he also performed at the Montreux, Dijon and Antibs Jazz festivals with the Howard Roberts Choral and also had the opportunity to play with gospel singers Marion Williams, Reverend Cleophus Robinson and blues singer Cousin Joe.

Over the years Marcel has had the opportunity to work with many artist including jazz musicians Dave Burns, Jerry.Eastman, Tyrone Jefferson, Roy Merriweather, Billy Mitchell, Jimmy Nottingham, Jim Roberts, Arvell Shaw, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Sigler, and toured with bassest Brian Torff. He has also performed with the Symphony of the New World and productions of "Ain't Misbehavin", "Eubie" and "Williams and Walker"

Now residing in Harpersfield, NY ( 20 minuets east of Oneonta) Marcel is working on several of his own projects while continuing to work freelance.
