upcoming jazz performances

Saturday 5/24 - Ann Hampton Callaway (8pm)
Ann Hampton Callaway is a signer/songwriter and pianist whose interpretations make her one of the most sought-after artists on the jazz and pops circuits. The New York Times said, “for sheer vocal beauty, no contemporary singer matches Ms. Callaway.”

Thursday 5/29 - Edmar Castaneda Trio (8pm)
Harpist, band leader and composer Edmar Castaneda was born in Bogota, Colombia, where he started playing the Colombian harp at the early age of thirteen. He has a unique style of playing which combines Latin jazz with traditional Colombian music and he has carved out a firm place in the international jazz scene. Now in his late 20s, Edmar moved to the United States in 1994 and was quickly recognized for his unmatched style and sound. He has performed with Paquito D'Rivera, John Scofield, Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, John Patitucci, Pablo Zinger, Dave Samuels, Trio De Paz, Guiovani Hidalgo, Lila Downs, Janis Siegel, Chico O'Farrill’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band, the DJango Reinhardt NY Festival, the United Nation Orchestra and other renown musicians.

Saturday 5/31 - Suzanne Vega (8pm)
Suzanne Vega is a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter with a unique folks/pop sound. For fans that have grown up with her, Vega’s latest album, Beauty & Crime is a revealing look into Vega’s continual evolution as songwriter and recording artist. For newcomers, it affords an opportunity to discover a unique voice that has, much like fellow die-hard New Yorker Lou Reed’s, been shaped by keenly observing urban life, glancing down the side streets and peering into the shadows, empathizing with the outsiders and dreamers, the helpless and the hopeful. Reed isn’t a far-fetched comparison: Vega, a fan, has said she’d been listening to his Berlin the day she wrote “Luka,” the economically arranged, emotionally devastating story of domestic abuse from her second album, Solitude Standing, which became a surprise worldwide hit in 1987.
